I practically gave up...and just like that, he Evolved into a pretty powerful-looking Digimon, but if he's gonna become a Digimon like that I'd want it to be under my own power, not because I...!

Not me, no. But my teammate Michael once dark evolved his partner Seadramon into Waru Seadramon. I had to smack him around a few times to get him to his senses. Also Taichi of the Japan team once dark evolved his Greymon to Skull Greymon so I know a little about this subject.
